1 Introduction to Music Theory: dotted notes


When you add a dot to a note you add half its value to it.

 

 

It is very often used to combine a crotchet with a quaver of the same pitch, where you want them to sound like one note.

 

 

The above example is the same as the example below:

 

 

The sign to combine two notes together as in the above example is a tie. It is just a little bow to combine two notes into one. Using a dot is very often easier. Ties are mostly used to tie notes from one bar to another or between groups of notes.
