1 Introduction to Music Theory: note values

 

The whole note is written with an open oval-shaped head. It is the longest note used nowadays. To indicate a duration half as long as the whole note you add a stem to the note-head.

 

This value you can divide in two again and by making the note black a quarter note is formed. If you divide a Crotchet in two, two Quavers are formed. This is done adding a flag to the stem.

 

Whole note or Semibreve

1/2 note or Minim

1/4 note or Crotchet

1/8 note or Quaver

1/16 Note or Semi Quaver

1/32 Note or Demi-Semi Quaver
