1 Introduction to Music Theory: chords
A chord is group of notes played together. Such a group of notes can have any form possible. The most basic form is the triad. The triad is created by adding a third to a note and adding another third to that one. If a triad is built on the first note of the scale it is called a tonic triad.

When we build chords like this triad on the scale of C we form following triads.

Note that above chords have two forms. Either the lower third consists of two tones and the upper third consists of one tone and a semitone - this is a major triad - or the other way around, which is a minor triad.
